Now that the holidays are over, you can either put away your Christmas decorations or rethink your wardrobe.
No brainer, right?
Updating your wardrobe is so much easier than taking down strings of colored lights, putting away the tree and carefully storing dozens of ornaments.
And don’t be concerned if most of your money went to Santa. An update doesn’t have to break the bank.
“The easiest way to update your wardrobe on a budget is through your accessories — scarves, handbags, shoes and jewelry,” said Sonya Cosentini, style expert for a leading retailer.
She especially likes scarves, which are functional and fashionable this season with bold prints, bright colors and eye-catching fringe. She suggests adding a fresh look to jeans and a T-shirt with a printed, square silk or linen scarf. It even can be an accent for that handbag you’ve been carrying for the past two years. Just tie a scarf around the handle, and voila, it’s new again.
Alexandra Bratton, sportswear buyer for Balliet’s, agrees that nothing refreshes an outfit like a new accessory.
“I would always say put your money into a great belt. That makes even the oldest standby black cardigan look new again,” she said.
While accessories are an easy update, nothing gets noticed more than glorious color.
“Purple is the huge color of fall and will continue throughout the winter months,” Cosentini said.
For spring, pinks, neon orange, chartreuse and yellow are the primary colors. Keep that in mind as you shop the after-holiday sales. Look for cardigans, tights, camisoles, T-shirts, handbags, shoes and chunky necklaces, rings and bracelets in these colors to rev up and pull together what’s already in your closet.
It’s good to know, too, that boots — booties, knee-highs, stilettos and equestrian styles — are becoming a staple in most wardrobes. If yours is lacking, add a pair. This season, flat boots are all the rage.
“Mixing masculine elements, like a riding boot or oxford shoe, with a super-feminine look such as a ruffle blouse or frilly printed dress” is a popular trend, Bratton said.
“Leather boots can totally change the look of your wardrobe and are very practical,” Cosentini said.
Sometimes an update is as simple as adding a new item. Consider a blouse with lace inserts or a casual blazer, both strong looks for spring, instead of another sweater. Or opt for a new style of jeans. Eden Turrentine, buyer for Allyson’s Closet, likes the look of boyfriend jeans, an oversize style with a worn finish and rolled cuff. She said they fit many body types and are not constrictive.
They are a “definite new look in denim,” she said.
Trends can even update investment pieces, such as a coat. Instead of the basic black or winter white, Cosentini suggests a coat in plum. It will add spunk to any outfit and brighten any winter day.
